#   NAMES OF JESUS IN THE BIBLE Notes
1 Alpha and Omega Revelation 1:8 - I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.  Christ is the beginning and the end of all things; that he was at the commencement, and will be at the close; and it is thus equivalent to saying that he has always existed, and that he will always exist.
2 Amen  Revelation 3:14 - And unto the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write; These things saith the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the beginning of the creation of God;  Thayer defines Amen as akin to saying "as so it is", "so be it", "may it be fulfilled". This name for Christ is only used here, but it is completely appropriate as Christ is indeed the fulfillment of God's will and plan for humanity.
Regarding "the beginning of the creation of God" - Plummer pointed out that the words here bear two possible interpretations:
(1) that which would make Christ the first created thing of all things God created (this is the view that Jehovah's Witnesses adhere to), and (2) that which would understand Christ as the Source of all the things God created.
We of course, believe the second interpretation. "The words mean, the one from whom creation took its beginning".
3 Apostle Hebrews 3:1 - Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus;  Thayer defines an apostle as a delegate, messenger, one sent forth with orders. This is certainly an appropriate title for Jesus as he was all of these things.
He is also called our high priest, in that in Old Testament times the high priest was the only one who could approach God as an intercessor. As the author of Hebrews tells us Jesus is a better intercessor and advocate because he is the Son of God.
4 Author and Finisher of our faith  Hebrews 12:2 - Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.  Author here means the inventor or originator of our faith. He is who our faith is built upon. And he is also said to be the finisher (cf. "It is finished" said by Jesus on the cross) . Thayer's definition is beautiful and illustrative: a perfecter - one who has in his own person raised faith to its perfection and so set before us the highest example of faith.
5 Bread of life John 6:48, 51 - I am that bread of life ... I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world.  One of the definitions that Vine gives for bread is "food in general, the necessities for the sustenance of life".. Using this definition we can see the Jesus is the sustainer of our life here on earth, and of our eternal life in heaven. The only "food" that can give us eternal life is Jesus, the bread of life, without him we would be spiritually starved.
6 Captain of Salvation Hebrews 2:9-10 - But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone. For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.  Captain means a leader, a commander, director. The captain is the leader of a ship in the same way that Christ is the captain of the church and the salvation that is achievable through that church. It is he whom we must "take our orders" from.
7 Counselor Isaiah 9:6 - For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.  Counselor: Much as a school counselor guides us though our school life, Jesus guides us though our spiritual life with his word, and his example.
We talked earlier about the Jehovah's witness belief that Jesus was a created being. This verse in Isaiah refutes that because Jesus is called Mighty God and Everlasting Father.
Prince of Peace: some synonyms for peace in this context are: safety, soundness, welfare, health, quiet, tranquility,
contentment.
8 Day Star (KJV)
Morning Star (NKJV)
2 Peter 1:19 - And so we have the prophetic word confirmed, which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts;  Thayer defines day star as - light-bringing, giving light. Compare this to John 8:12  :Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life."
9 Dayspring Luke 1:76-79  [ Zechariah's Prophecy ]
"And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Highest; For you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways, To give knowledge of salvation to His people By the remission of their sins,  Through the tender mercy of our God, With which the Dayspring from on high has visited us; To give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, To guide our feet into the way of peace."
Dayspring indicates the rising of the sun, once again an allusion to the light. Macknight offers this comment:  For most aptly may Jesus be likened to the rising sun; his doctrine being to the souls of men what light is to their bodies...like the light, it throws a beauty and pleasantness upon every thing in this lower world, which, without the assurance of God’s reconcileableness, would be but a dark and dreary scene to sinners.
10 Door, the  John 10:9 - I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.   The image here is that of a sheep pen with a door or gate that keeps the sheep in and predators out. Jesus us is telling us that He is the (only) door by which we can enter the kingdom of heaven. This is not good news for other religions of the world, but they seem to unconcerned about it. The definition of the word door is a portal or an entrance. There is no back door into heaven, the only way to get in is through the main entrance, our Savior Jesus Christ.
11 Emmanuel Isaiah 7:14 -  Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a Son, and shall call His name Immanuel. Immanuel is one of the most beautiful descriptions of Jesus, for it is translated as "God With Us". In three simple words it gives a complete summary of God's will for his Son - to live like us, among us, experiencing the human condition and showing us the way to salvation.
12 Ensign Isaiah 11:10 – And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious. Brown-Driver-Briggs defines ensign as something lifted up, a standard, a signal, a banner, a sign. Jesus was indeed lifted up when he was resurrected by God after being totally obedient to the Father. He was also a sign from God ushering in a new covenant between God and his people.
13 Foundation Isaiah 28:16 - Therefore thus says the Lord GOD: "Behold, I lay in Zion a stone for a foundation, A tried stone, a precious cornerstone, a sure foundation; Webster defines foundation as the basis or ground work, or any thing; that on which any thing stands, and by which it is supported. Jesus is the foundation of our faith, He is what our faith is built upon. Without Jesus as the foundation any so called religion is vain and ineffectual.  Compare to Matthew 7:24  "Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock"
14 I AM John 8:58 - Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I AM."  We use the phrase I am    X    to indicate our condition in the present moment. I am sick, I am tired etc. When Jesus says I AM he is expressing a truth that has been true for every second of eternity. It is true now, it has always been true in the past and will always be true in the future. This again disputes the JW doctrine that Jesus came into being (was created) at a specific time in the eternal continuum - Jesus tells us here that he was not created but has always existed.
In using the phrase "I Am" Jesus used a clear divine title belonging to Yahweh or Jehovah or Lord (various translations) alone as referenced in Exodus 3:13-14 (And God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM.") and this was understood by Jesus’ listeners, which is proven  by their response to his claim in the next verse; They took up stones to throw at Him. They wanted to stone Him for blasphemy, for claiming to be God.
15 Lamb of God John 1:29 -  The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, "Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!  The lamb was used as a sacrificial offering under the law of Moses. The lamb was an antitype of Jesus who would also be used as a sacrifice for the remission of the sins of mankind. The term lamb is used extensively throughout the book of Revelation to signify Jesus Christ, highlighting the Lamb's and authority in heaven, the power of the Lamb's blood, the victory that lamb will have over Satan.
16 Light of the world John 8:12 - Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, "I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life."  Here again Jesus is called "light". The only thing that can eliminate darkness is light.  The only thing that can lift man out of the darkness of sin is the perfect light which is Jesus in him there is no darkness at all (1 John 1:5). As Christians we have the benefit of walking in the light where the truth is available in its totality. Non-believers have to walk in the darkness, where they constantly stumble and fall and cannot see the truth.
17 Lion of the tribe of Judah Revelation 5:5 - But one of the elders said to me, "Do not weep. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed to open the scroll and to loose its seven seals."  It's interesting that Jesus is called both a lion and a lamb, which would appear to be opposites. But Jesus has characteristics of both animals. Like a lamb, He is gentle (Matthew 11:29), sacrificial (Ephesians 5:2), pure and perfect (1 Peter 1:19). Like a lion he is majestic (the king of the animal kingdom), courageous, strong, capable of easily destroying his prey.
18 Lord, mighty in battle Psalms 24:8 - Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, The LORD mighty in battle.  As Christians we are thankful that Jesus is stronger than, and able to defeat Satan. If that were not the case, we could never be sure of our eternal fate (i.e. what if Satan won?)
19 Lord of the Sabbath Mark 2:28 – For the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath. Coffman's commentary says this: This proclamation of his own authority took the whole matter out of the context of their law, and their interpretations, and their opinions, and even out of the Law of Moses. Christ had the right to set aside all of those; and, in the final analysis, his disciples needed no permission except Christ's to do whatever he permitted. This place has been cited as proof that Christians should keep the Sabbath day, but the opposite is taught. The Sabbath should be ignored and rejected utterly, unless Christ commanded it (which he did not); for Paul said, "He took it out of the way, nailing it to his cross" (Colossians 2:14).
20 Man of sorrows Isaiah 53:3 -  He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief.  This verse proves that Jesus was like us in many ways - he experienced rejection, hatred, sorrow and grief firsthand and because of that he is our perfect advocate with the Father. He is someone we can truly relate to because of all of his human qualities and experiences.
21 Morning Star Revelation 22:16 - I, Jesus, have sent My angel to testify to you these things in the churches. I am the Root and the Offspring of David, the Bright and Morning Star Barnes says this about the Morning Star: That bright and beautiful star which at some seasons of the year precedes the rising of the sun, and leads on the day. The reference here is to that star as the harbinger of day; and the relationship to the Savior is, that he sustains a relation to a dark world similar to this beautiful star.
22 Overseer 1 Peter 2:25 - For you were like sheep going astray, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.  Different bible translations use different words for Overseer, such as Bishop, Protector, Keeper. Personally I like Protector, as it reminds me that as long as I remain faithful and obedient, God will protect my soul from Satan predations.
23 Physician Matthew 9:12 - When Jesus heard that, He said to them, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.  Jesus is a physician in that he was sent to heal those who were and are sick with sin. This kind of sickness cannot be cured with medication - the remedy used by God was Christ's atoning death on the cross.
24 Potentate 1 Timothy 6:15 b - e who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords,  Thayer defines potentate as a high officer, royal minister of great authority. This title is certainly appropriate as Matthew 28:18  says "And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, "All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.
25 Second Man, the 1 Corinthians 15:45-47,49 - And so it is written, "The first man Adam became a living being" The last Adam became a life-giving spirit. However, the spiritual is not first, but the natural, and afterward the spiritual. The first man was of the earth, made of dust; the second Man is the Lord from heaven... And as we have borne the image of the man of dust, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly Man. Adam was the first head and representative of physical humanity, Christ is the head and representative of spiritual humanity. Jesus is of the spirit,  whereas Adam was of the earth. We as humans have been endowed with the physical characteristics of Adam and some of the spiritual characteristics of Jesus.
26 Shepherd, Good John 10:11 -  "I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep.  Jesus performs many of the same services for his church that a shepherd performs for his flock, unifies them, keeps them from harm, feeds them, provides for their safety,  knows them by name. Sacrifices his life to save the flock.
27 Stone of Stumbling

Rock of Offense
1 Peter 2:8 - and "A STONE OF STUMBLING AND A ROCK OF OFFENSE." They stumble, being disobedient to the word, to which they also were appointed.  Peter is quoting Isaiah 8:14  which says "He will be as a sanctuary, But a stone of stumbling and a rock of offense".   Paul also uses this phraseology in Romans 9:33:   "As it is written: "Behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone and rock of offense, and whoever believes on him will not be put to shame."
Jesus was a stumbling stone to Jews, as they refused to believe he was the Messiah for several reasons: (a) he did not establish an earthly kingdom (b) his lowly birth (not very "king-like"), (c) his radical teaching (e.g. love your enemies), to name a few. His miracles, his teaching, and his fulfillment of hundreds of Old Testament prophecies was not enough to convince them that he was the promised Messiah.  They would not accept his claim to be God because they believed in only one God (the Father). This stumbling prevented their salvation.
Many were offended by his claims to be the son of God, and considered it blasphemy and worthy of crucifixion. Hence the term Rock of Offense
Barnes: "a rock of offense" expresses he same idea as the phrase “stone of stumbling.” The word rendered “offense,” means “a trap-stick - a crooked stick on which the bait is fastened which the animal strikes against, and so springs the trap,” so then “a trap, gin, snare”; and then “anything which one strikes or stumbles against; a stumbling-block.”
28 Surety (Guarantee)  Hebrews 7:22 - by so much more Jesus has become a surety of a better covenant. Vine gives this explanation of the word surety: It signifies bail, the bail who personally answers for anyone, whether with his life or his property. The verse refers to the abiding and unchanging character of His Melchizedek priesthood, by reason of which His suretyship is established by God's oath (Hebrews 7:20-21). As the Surety, Jesus is the personal guarantee of the terms of the new and better covenant, secured on the grounds of His perfect sacrifice (Hebrews 7:27).
29 Way / Truth / Life John 14:6 -  Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.  The word the may be the most important word in this verse. Jesus is not a way, or a truth, but the (denoting exclusivity) only way, the only truth, the only life.
The word
way means a road or a path. Jesus is the only path to the Father and to salvation as the second part of this verse indicates.
Jesus is
the life, for we are made alive unto God through Him, and brought to eternal life hereafter, only in and through Him, who is the resurrection and the life, (Romans 6:11). For as God hath given to believers eternal life, this life is in his Son, and only he that hath the Son hath life (John 5:11-12). - Joseph Benson commentary
30 Word  John 1:1 -  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.  Thayer gives an excellent exposition on the word Word: "In John's writings, Word denotes the essential Word of God, Jesus Christ, the personal wisdom and power in union with God, his minister in creation and government of the universe, the cause of all the world’s life both physical and ethical, which for the procurement of man’s salvation put on human nature in the person of Jesus the Messiah, the second person in the Godhead, and shone forth conspicuously from His words and deeds."
u We must understand from this verse that the Word (Jesus) is God, not "a God" as the Jehovah's Witnesses would have us believe. They have rewritten the bible into their own translation (New World Translation) to say The Word was a God, instead of the Word was God. This is a corruption of bible truth.
31 Chief Cornerstone 1 Peter 2:6  Therefore it is also contained in the Scripture, "Behold, I lay in Zion a chief cornerstone, elect, precious, and he who believes on him will by no means be put to  shame."  This is the same as the foundation stone; and it is called here the chief corner stone because it is laid in the foundation, at an angle of the building where its two sides form the ground work of a side and end wall. And this might be designed to show that, in Jesus, both Jews and Gentiles were to be united; and this is probably the reason why it was also called a stone of stumbling, and rock of offense; for nothing stumbled, nothing offended the Jews so much as the calling of the Gentiles into the Church of God, and admitting them to the same privileges which had been before peculiar to the Jews.
32 Everlasting Father Isaiah 9:6  For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.  It's interesting that Jesus is  called Everlasting Father - we normally think of him as the Son, not the Father, but this verse demonstrates that he is equal to the father, not subservient to the Father as some believe.
33 Everlasting Father Isaiah 9:6  For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder.
34 Propitiation (expiation, our Sin-offering) 1 John 2:2  And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.  This means that by dying for us, He freed us from the guilt of our sins and restored us to God by providing the needed satisfaction and by removing every barrier to fellowship. God can show mercy to us because Christ has satisfied the claims of justice. It is not often that an advocate (or lawyer) pays for his client's sins; yet that is what our Lord has done, and most remarkable of all, He paid for them by the sacrifice of Himself.
