3.       T – F    Samuel also kissed Saul. (I Sam. 10:1)

…and kissed him…

A.     True

B.      This kiss would have been a sign of affection, approval, respect, or all three.

4.       For what purpose was Saul anointed? (I Sam. 10:1)

…It is not because the Lord hath anointed thee to be captain over his inheritance.

A.     To be captain over the Lord’s inheritance.

B.      The Lord had a very specific place for Saul among the people.  This anointing consecrated him to that office.  He would know it and all of Israel were aware of it.

C.      At the hill of God where is a garrison of Philistines, he would meet a company of prophets coming down from the high place carrying instruments of music and prophesying.

D.     The Spirit of the Lord would come upon Saul and he would prophesy

7.       Where would Saul meet two men who would inform him that the donkeys had been found? (I Sam. 10:2)

A.     Rachel’s sepulcher in the border of Benjamin at Zelsah.

B.      Rachel died giving birth to Benjamin (Gen. 35:16-20).

C.     Her burial site was known and honored for many years after her death.

8.       Who was also sorrowing for Saul? (I Sam. 10:2)

…and they will say unto thee, The asses which thou wentest to seek are found:  and, lo, thy father hath left the care of the asses, and sorroweth for you, saying, What shall I do for my son?

Then shalt thou go on forward from thence, and thou shalt come to the plain of Tabor, and there shall meet thee three men going up to God to Bethel…

A.     Three men going up to God to Bethel.

B.      “The fact that the three men were going up to God at Bethel, shows that there was still a place of sacrifice consecrated to the Lord at Bethel, where Abraham and Jacob had erected altars to the Lord who had appeared to them there (Gen. 12:8; Gen. 13:3-4; Gen.28:18-19; Gen. 35:7); for the kids and loaves and wine were sacrificial gifts which they were about to offer” (e-sword, Keil & Delitzsch).

10.   The men would be carrying a different object.  Name the objects they would be carrying. (I Sam. 10:3).

…one carrying three kids, and another carrying three loaves of bread, and another carrying a bottle of wine.

A.      3 kids                                            B.  3 loaves of bread                            C.  1 bottle of win

And they will salute thee, and give thee two loaves of bread; which thou shalt receive of their hands.

c.       K&D:  “They will ask thee of thy welfare.”

d.      It as a sign of friendship.

B.      They will give thee two loaves of bread.

1.       K&D state that these things would have been offered as offerings to God.

2.       Their giving of the loaves would constitute a double sign.

12.   Who would Saul meet at the hill of God? (I Sam. 10:5)

After that thou shalt come to the hill of God, which is the garrison of the Philistines:  and it shall come to pass, when thou art come thither to the city, that thou shalt meet a company of prophets…

A.     A company of the prophets

B.      It seems that Samuel, who was a prophet of God, had formed schools of prophets, men of God designed to assist him.

C.     This company had come to the hill of God to worship.

1.       This is the city of Gilgal.

2.       The Philistines had taken command of this city in order to keep their rule over the Israelites.

13.   What four musical instruments would they have with them? (I Sam. 10:5)

…coming down with a psaltery, and a tabret, and a pipe, and a harp, before them…

A.     Psaltery:  a kind of lyre with ten strings, in the shape of an earthen wine bottle

B.      Tabret:  a kind of drum or tambourine, or timbrel

C.     Pipe:  a kid of flute

D.     Harp:  a string instrument

E.      NOTE:  These instruments went “before” the company of the prophets.

1.       This was a festal procession.

2.       The musicians went before the prophets in this procession.

14.   What action would they be engaged in? (I Sam. 10:5)

…and they shall prophesy.

4.       Gave comfort to the people

16.   T – F    The Spirit of the Lord would come upon Saul, but he would not prophesy. (I Sam. 10:6)

And the Spirit of the Lord will come upon thee, and thou shalt prophesy with them…

A.     False

17.   “…and thou shalt be turned into another  man” (I Sam. 10:6)

18.   What does the above phrase mean?

A.     Saul’s primary labors had been as a shepherd in his father’s house.

B.      Now, he would become ruler.  The inspiration of the Holy Spirit would assist in changing his thinking processes.

1.       He would be concerned with things pertaining to the kingdom.

2.       He would give attention to judging the nation.

3.       He would have to develop a military mindset.

C.     LESSON:  In order for us to take on new positions, we often have to become “another man.”

1.       When one became a manager of FEDEX, he could no longer be “one of the boys.”

2.       One’s mindset has to change.  His priorities have to change.  His behaviors have to change.  His goals have to change.

19.   What does I Samuel 10:7 authorize Saul to do?

And let it be, when these signs are come unto thee, that thou do as occasion serve thee; for God is with thee.

A.     Saul was now free to begin to formulate his government.

B.      Saul was free to take charge when enemies came against the nation of Israel.

C.     The signs confirmed the words spoken by Samuel.  Saul, therefore, should not have any trepidation about doing the things necessary to become the first king of Israel.

20.   Where was Samuel going to meet Saul in order to offering burnt offerings and sacrifices? (I Sam. 10:8)

And thou shalt go down before me to Gilgal; and, behold I will come down unto thee, to offer burnt offerings, and to sacrifice sacrifices of peace offerings…

A.     Gilgal

Ancient Israel large map

21.   How long was Saul to wait for Samuel? (I Sam. 10:8)

…seven days shalt thou tarry, till I come to thee, and show thee what thou shalt do.

A.     He was to wait seven days.

B.      NOTE:  This is the first command that Saul will receive from the prophet of God.  It was important for him to make note of this and do exactly has Samuel commanded him.

22.   T – F    God gave Saul “another heart” that day. (I Sam. 10:9)

And it was so, that when he had turned his back to go from Samuel, God gave him another heart…

A.     True

B.      It is the heart of man that determines the actions of man (Prov. 4:23).  Saul was to become a new man.  This was done by changing his thinking processes.

23.   T – F    None of the signs came to pass (I Sam. 10:9)

…and all those signs came to pass that day.

A.     False

24.   When Saul came to the hill of God, what came upon him that enabled him to prophesy? (I Sam. 10:10)

And when they came thither to the hill, behold, a company of prophets met him; and the Spirit of God came upon him, and he prophesied among them.

A.     The Spirit of God came upon him.

B.      When the text says:  “The Spirit of God came upon him,” it does not mean that the Spirit literally sat on him.

1.       It means that the Spirit’s power entered into him.

2.       This power was evidenced by Saul’s being able to prophesy.

25.   What did the people say who witnessed Saul prophesying? (I Sam. 10:11)

And it came to pass, when all that knew him beforetime saw that, behold, he prophesied among the prophets, then the people said one to another, What is this that is come upon the son of Kish?  Is Saul also among the prophets?

A.     They asked:  “Is Saul also among the prophets?”

B.      Many present knew Saul.  They knew his family background.  They knew the work that he did.  His ability to prophesy took them by surprise.  They wondered if this could be true.  “Is Saul also among the prophets?”

C.     LESSON:  Sometime individuals surprise us because of what they become.  They chose an occupation or a lifestyle that was completely unexpected.

26.   Explain these words:  “And one of the same place answered and said, But who is their father?” (I Sam. 10:12).

And one of the same place answered and said, But who is their father?...

A.     We do not have much information about the “schools” or companies of the prophets.  They seem to appear in Biblical history.

B.      Each school had a “father” or a leader.  These leaders where known to the people.

C.     Since Saul was prophesying, one individual wanted to know who it was that Saul was overseen by.

27.   What statement eventually became a proverb? (I Sam. 10:12)

…Therefore it became a proverb, Is Saul also among the prophets?

A.     There was shock among the people because Saul could prophesy.  It was something extremely out of the ordinary, something unexpected.

B.      The words came to be “used to express astonishment at the appearance of any man in a sphere of life which had hitherto been altogether strange to him” (e-sword, K&D).

28.   After Saul prophesied, where did he go? (I Sam. 10:13)

And when he had made an end of prophesying, he came to the high place.

A.     The high place

B.      This appears to be the place where his father lived (see the next verse).  His father may have chosen to live near the high place where sacrifices were made.
