Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.

 

1.    Knowing this

A.   Strong (1097:  to know absolutely

B.    Thayer:  to know, understand, perceive, have knowledge of

C.   Vine:  to be taking in knowledge, to come to know, recognize, understand, or to understand completely

 

2.    Trying

A.   Strong (1383):  a testing

B.    Thayer:  the proving, that by which something is tried or proved, a test

C.   Vine:  a test, a proof, a crucible

 

3.    Faith

A.   Strong (4102):  persuasion, that is, credence, moral conviction (of religious truth…), especially reliance upon Christ for salvation; abstractly constancy in such profess-sion

B.    Thayer:  conviction of the truth of anything, belief; in the NT of a conviction or belief respecting man’s relationship to God and divine things, generally with the included idea of trust and holy fervor born of faith and joined with it…fidelity, faithfulness, the character of one who can be relied upon

C.   Vine:  primarily, firm persuasion, a conviction based upon hearing…is used in the N.T. always of faith in God or Christ, or things spiritual

 

4.    Worketh

A.   Strong (2716):  to work fully, that is, accomplish; by implication to finish, fashion

B.    Thayer:  to work out, i.e. to do that from which something results

C.   Vine:  signifies to work out, achieve, effect by toil…

 

5.    Patience

A.   Strong (5281):  cheerful (or hopeful) endurance, constancy

B.    Thayer:  steadfastness, constancy, endurance, in the NT the characteristic of a man who is not swerved from his deliberate purpose and his loyalty to faith and piety by even the greatest trials and sufferings…a patient enduring, sustaining, perseverance

C.   Vine:  Literally, an abiding under…may be passive, i.e., = endurance
