JAMES 1:12

Blessed is the man that endureth temptation:  for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him.

 

1.    Blessed

A.   Strong (3107):  supremely blessed; well off, fortunate.

B.    Thayer:  blessed, happy

C.   Vine:  to pronounce happy, blessed

 

2.    Endureth

A.   Strong (5278):  Literally “to stay under,” to undergo, that is (bear) trials, have fortitude, persevere

B.    Thayer:  to persevere:  under misfortune and trials to hold fast to one’s faith in Christ, to endure, bear bravely and calmly:  ill treatments

C.   Vine:  to abide under, to bear up courageously (under suffering)

 

3.    Temptation

A.   Strong (3986):  a putting to proof…by experience of evil

B.    Thayer:  an experiment, attempt, trial, proving, the trail of man’s fidelity, integrity, virtue, constancy…adversity, affliction, trouble: sent by God and serving to test or prove one’s character, faith, and holiness.

C.   Vine:  of trials or temptations, Divinely permitted or sent

 

4.    Tried

A.   Strong (1384):  acceptable, approved

B.    Thayer:  accepted, pleasing, acceptable

C.   Vincent:  Literally, having become approved…been approved by trail…when he hath been approved

 

5.    Receive

A.   Strong (2983):  to get hold of…to have offered to one

B.    Thayer:  to take…to receive what is offered to one

C.   Vine:  to receive

 

6.    Crown

A.   Strong (4735):  a chaplet (as a badge of loyalty, a prize in the public games or a symbol of honor generally

B.    Thayer:  a crown…metaphorically the eternal blessedness which will be given as a prize to the genuine servants of God and Christ:  the crown (wreath) which is the reward of righteousness

C.   Vine:  the victor’s crown, the symbol of triumph in the game or some such contest; hence, by metonymy, a reward or prize…it stands as en emblem of life, joy, reward and glory

 

 

 

7.   Life

A.   Strong (2222):  life

B.    Thayer:  life, life real and genuine, a life active and vigorous

C.   Vine:  life in the absolute sense, life as God has it

 

8.   Promised

A.   Strong (1861):  to engage to do something

B.    Thayer:  to announce that one is about to do or furnish something, to promise (of one’s own accord) to engage voluntarily

C.   Vine:  a law term, denoting a summons, also meant an undertaking to do or give something, a promise

 

9.   Love

A.   Strong (25):  to love

B.    Thayer:  of persons, to welcome, to entertain, to be fond of, to love dearly

C.   Vine:  Christian love has God for its primary object, and expresses itself first of all in implicit obedience to His commandments
