JAMES 2:2

For if there come unto your assembly a man with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor man in vile raiment.

 

1.    Come

A.   Strong (1525):  to enter

B.    Thayer:  to come in

C.   Vine:  to come into, to go into

 

2.    Assembly

A.   Strong (4864):  assemblage of persons, specifically a Jewish synagogue…by analogy a Christian church

B.    Thayer:  a bringing together, gathering…an assembly of Jews formally gathered together…name transferred to an assembly of Christians formally gathered together for religious purposes

C.   Vine:  to come together, …It is frequently used of “coming together,” especially of the gathering of a local church

 

3.    Gold ring

A.   Strong (5554):  gold ringed, that is wearing a golden finger ring or similar jewelry

B.    Thayer:  gold ringed, adorned with gold rings

C.   Vine:  a gold-ringed person

 

4.    Goodly

A.   Strong (2986):  radiate, magnificent or sumptuous

B.    Thayer:  shining, brilliant, splendid, magnificent, splendid things, i.e. luxuries or elegancies in dress or style

C.   Vine:  gay, bright, goodly

 

5.    Apparel

A.   Strong (2066):  dress

B.    Thayer:  clothing, raiment, apparel

C.   Vine:  clothing, raiment

 

6.    A poor man

A.   Strong (4434):  beggar, pauper

B.    Thayer:  reduced to begging…destitute of wealth, influence, position, honour, helpless, poor, needy

C.   Vine:  has a broad sense of poor

 

7.   Vile

A.   Strong (4508):  dirty, that is (relatively) cheap or shabby

B.    Thayer:  to be dirty, grow filthy

C.   Vine:  filthy, dirty…literally, of old shabby clothing
