JAMES 2:16

And one of you say unto the, Depart in peace, be warmed and filled; notwithstanding ye give them not those things which are needful to the body; what doth it profit?

 

1.    Depart

A.   Strong (5217):  to lead (oneself) under, that is, withdraw or retire (as if sinking out of sight)

B.    Thayer:  to lead under. To withdraw one’s self, to go away, depart

C.   Vine:  to go…depart…in this passage the idea is perhaps that of a polite dismissal

 

2.    Peace

A.   Strong (1515):  (to join) in peace…by implication prosperity

B.    Thayer:  security, safety, prosperity, felicity

C.   Vine:  The sense of rest and contentment consequent thereon

 

3.    Warmed

A.   Strong (2328):  to heat (oneself)

B.    Thayer:  to make warm, to heat, to warm one’s self

C.   Vine:  to warm oneself

 

4.    Filled

A.   Strong (5526):  to fodder, that is…to gorge (supply food in abundance)

B.    Thayer:  to fill…satisfy with food, to fulfill or satisfy the desire of anyone

C.   Vine:  to fill or satisfy with food

 

5.    Give them not

A.   Strong (1325, 846):  to not give

B.    Thayer:  to fail to give to someone, to refuse to bestow a gift, to not give what is due or obligatory

C.   Vine:  to give not

 

6.    Things which are needful

A.   Strong (2006):  serviceable, that is, (by implication) requisite

B.    Thayer:  fit, suitable, convenient, advantageous, needful, especially of the necessities of life

C.   Vine:  suitable, convenient, thus, useful, necessary

 

7.   Body

A.   Strong (4983):  the body

B.    Thayer:  the body of man

C.   Vine:  the body as a whole, instrument of life

 

8.   Profit

A.   Strong (3786):  (to heap up, that is accumulate or benefit); gain

B.    Thayer:  advantage, profit

C.   Vine:  profit, advantage, lit. to increase
