Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone.
1. Faith
A. Strong (4102): persuasion, that is, credence, moral conviction, reliance upon Christ, constancy in such profession
B. Thayer: conviction of the truth of anything, belief…belief with the predominate idea of trust (or confidence)
C. Vine: firm persuasion, a conviction based upon hearing…used in the N.T. always of faith in God or Christ, or things spiritual
2. Works
A. Strong (2041): to work; toil (as an effort or occupation) by implication or act
B. Thayer: an act, deed, thing done
C. Vine: work, employment, task…denotes every activity undertaken for Christ’s sake…in James, as the effect of faith
3. Dead
A. Strong (3498): dead
B. Thayer: one that has breathed his last…destitute of force or power, inactive, inoperative
C. Vine: dead, inactive and barren
