Sowing The Seed Series
Class 2 – The Authority of the Scriptures

1.    The Bible is all sufficient

a.    Scripture is given by inspiration of God (2 Tim 3:16-17)

                                          i.    In it is everything man could ever need to know (Jude 1:3)

b.    We must not listen to any other “gospel” (Gal 1:6-9)

c.    We must be able to rightly divide the Word (2 Tim 2:15)

                                          i.    Divide means to dissect

2.    The Old Testament is no longer binding (Col 2, Eph 2, Gal 3)

a.    Hebrews had to be physically circumcised to be God’s (Gen 17:14)

b.    Christ’s law commands spiritual circumcision (Col 2:11-13)

                                          i.    This is fulfilled through baptism

c.    Christ blotted out the handwriting of ordinances (Col 2:14)

                                          i.    It was against us

ii.    It was contrary to us

iii.    He took it out of the way by nailing it to His cross

d.    Therefore, no one can judge you regarding holy days (Col 2:16-17)

                                          i.    These things were a shadow of what was to come

e.    Hebrews 9:15-17

                                          i.    The New Law came into effect when Christ died

f.     Gentiles had no hope under the old law (Eph 2:11-13)

                                          i.    We now have hope through the blood of Christ

g.    Christ broke down the wall dividing Jew and Gentile (Eph 2:14-18)

                                          i.    He abolished it in His flesh

h.    Now we are all part of the same household of God (Eph 2:19-22)

                                          i.    We are walls built upon the chief cornerstone

ii.    We as individuals are part of the framework of the church

i.      Those living under the works of law are cursed (Gal 3:10-12)

                                          i.    Justification by law requires complete obedience to  law

j.      Christ redeemed us by becoming a curse for us (Gal 3:13-14)

                                          i.    He did it so the Gentiles might receive the blessing of Abraham

k.    The law came because of sin (Gal 3:19-20)

l.      The law can’t give life because we have all sinned (Gal 3:21-22)

m.   The law was our schoolmaster to lead us to Christ (Gal 2:24-29)

                                          i.    Once Christ came we are no longer under the schoolmaster

ii.    There is no such thing as a Jew or a Gentile anymore

3.    The Old Testament has two primary purposes today

a.    It is for our learning (Rom 15:4)

b.    It gives us both good and poor examples of faith (1 Cor 10:1-11)

4.    If we use the Old Testament as our authority today we will be lost

a.    We are committing spiritual adultery on Christ (Rom 7:1-6)

b.    We will fall from God’s grace (Gal 5:1-4)
