THE KING OF KINGS

Gary McDade

INTRODUCTION

A.   There are many forms of government in our world.  The church is a monarchy.

B.    There are many metaphors of the church in the New Testament:  a body, a temple, an army, a vineyard, etc.

C.   There is also the metaphor of the church as a kingdom (Col. 1:13; Heb. 12:28).  In this kingdom, Jesus is the King.  In fact, Jesus is the King of Kings.

1.     Revelation 17:14

These shall make war with the Lamb, and the Lamb shall overcome them:  for he is Lord of lords, and King of kings:  and they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful.

2.     Revelation 19:11-16

And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war….And he hath a vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

3.     Psalm 24:7-10

Lift up your heads, O ye gates; and be ye lifted up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.  Who is this King of glory?  The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in battle.  Lift up your heads, O ye gats; even lift them up, ye everlasting doors; and the King of glory shall come in.  Who is this King of glory?  The Lord of hosts, he is the King of glory.  Selah.

1.     Isaiah 9:6-7

For unto us a child is born, and unto us a son is given:  and the government shall be upon his shoulder:  and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The ever-lasting Father, The Prince of Peace.  Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, and upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even forever.  The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then?  Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king.  To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth.  Everyone that is of the truth heareth my voice.

For the law maketh men high priests which have infirmity; but the word of the oath, which was since the law, maketh the Son, who is consecrated for evermore.
