The Four Miracles at Clavary
by: Dalton Gilreath
Lesson Text: Matthew 27:45-53

I.              Intro: The crucifixion of Jesus was an awful event. Nothing is more moving than His display of love for us. Sometimes, as we study the cross, we might overlook the four miracles that took place during this time. These certainly were not coincidence. What message was God conveying with these miracles?

II.            Darkness

a.    Darkness covered the land for three hours beginning at noon.

                                          i.    This was prophesied in Amos 8:9.

b.    Darkness is used by God to represent wickedness (Eph 6:12)

c.    It is also used to represent death and destruction.

                                          i.    Consider the ninth plague was darkness.

1.    What was the 10th? The death of the firstborn.

ii.    Babylon’s destruction was illustrated with darkness (Isa 13:9-10).

1.    Jerusalem’s demise was as well (Jer 15:9).

iii.    We also see darkness in Hell for all eternity (Matt 25:30).

d.    The darkness with Jesus symbolized the wickedness of man.

                                          i.    It represented Satan’s bruising of His heal (Gen 3:15).

e.    It also represented His death.

III.           The Veil was rent in half

a.    The veil’s purpose was to divide the holy and most holy place (Ex 26:33).

                                          i.    God was in the most holy place and only the high priest could enter once per year.

ii.    This reiterated in Hebrews 9:2-4.

b.    The veil’s removal represented our drawing near to God through Jesus’ death (Heb 10:19-22).

                                          i.    The veil was made of red, blue, and purple (Ex 26:31).

1.    Red we know is the color of man (flesh/blood).

2.    Blue is the color of God (Ex 24:10, Ezek 1:26).

3.    Red and blue together make purple!

IV.          The earthquake was the third miracle

a.    God’s presence was often indicated by an earthquake (Ex 19:18).

                                          i.    Psalm 68:8

b.    Earthquakes were also used for freedom from bondage (Acts 16:26).

                                          i.    The jailor and his family were later freed from sin (26ff).

c.    They also represent that physical things will be destroyed (Heb 12:26-28).

                                          i.    Spiritual things will last forever.

d.    Jesus truly was the Son of God (Matt 27:54)

                                          i.    He made it possible to be free from sin.

ii.    He created His kingdom that would never be destroyed (Dan 2:44).

V.           Saints came up from the graves and went into Jerusalem.

a.    Notice that it was saints only that arose.

                                          i.    Christians will rise one day and be changed (1 Cor 15:51-58).

b.    Christians will travel into new Jerusalem when they are resurrected (Rev 21:1-4).

                                          i.    This miracle symbolized the resurrection and entry into Heaven through the blood of Christ.
