The Ten Commandments
by: Dalton Gilreath

I.              Introduction

a.    Many in the religious would believe the ten commandments are all we need in order to get to Heaven

                                          i.    They fight to have them put on the walls of public buildings

b.    2 Tim 2:15 says to “rightly divide the word of truth”

                                          i.    The fact is, the ten commandments are not even applicable today

ii.    Even in the Old Law they were not all they needed to know

II.            They are not binding because

a.    They were part of the Old Law that’s been done away

                                          i.    There was a law coming unlike the Old Law (Jer 31:31-33)

ii.    God showed Jesus as the one to listen to in matters of religion today (Matt 17:3-5)

1.    Notice Moses and Elijah left

iii.    Jesus has all authority leaving none for Moses (Matt 28:18)

b.    They were given specifically to Israel

                                          i.    Moses is very emphatic about this (Deut 5:2-3)

c.    The Bible says the ten commandments have been removed

                                          i.    Paul says the Old Law is dead (Rom 7:4-7)

1.    In verse 7 he quotes the ten commandments

ii.    Paul says the writing on tablets of stone has been done away (2 Cor 3:7-13)

1.    He mentions them specifically as Moses came down the mount shining (Ex 34:29)

III.           The consequences of binding the ten commandments

a.    This means the Sabbath is still binding

                                          i.    We can’t work on Saturdays (Ex 20:10)

1.    That means not even picking up sticks (Num 15:32-36)

ii.    Who will enforce the death penalty today (Ex 31:12-16)

b.    The whole law is binding if any one part still is binding

                                          i.    Paul makes this clear in Galatians 5:3

c.    This means we have more than one lawgiver

                                          i.    James says there is only one (4:12)

ii.    Paul said to serve both laws is spiritual adultery on Christ (Rom 7:2)

IV.          Does this mean we can lie, steal, kill, etc

a.    The New Testament has nine of the ten commandments (Gal 5:20, Matt 6:9, Eph 6:1-3, Rom 13:9)

                                          i.    The only one missing  is the Sabbath (Col 2:14-17)
