Deuteronomy 13:12, 13 – If thou shalt hear say in one of thy cities, which the Lord thy God hath given thee to dwelt here, saying, Certain man, the children of Belial, are gone out from among you, and have withdrawn the inhabitants of their city, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which ye have not known.
Thought: We noted that a little leaven can leaven an entire lump. In Israel, it was possible for a few worthless people called “the children of Belial” to influence entire cities. They would call out saying: “Let us go and serve other gods.” The reasons given for the apostasy are not revealed. Their cries, however, are answered. The residents of the city follow the baseless people into idolatry. Cities are centers of commerce. They are places were many people intersect. From cities, evil can spread quickly.
