I’ve Got Love Like An Ocean

I.              Intro

a.    Love is more important than anything you say (1 Cor 13:1)

b.    Love is more important than anything you have (1 Cor 13:2)

c.    Love is more important than anything you do (1 Cor 13:3)

II.            You cannot think of the Earth unless you think of the ocean

a.    71% of Earth’s surface is covered in oceanic water

                                          i.    Psalm 24:1-2

1.    God laid Earth’s foundation on the sea

                                        ii.    2 Peter 3:5

1.    God made the Earth in and out of the water

                                       iii.    In Genesis 1, God made the Earth of water (1:2)

1.    On day three He brought up the dry land

b.    John 13:34-35

                                          i.    Christ gives a new (kainos) commandment

1.    This is “new” as in quality

2.    The command was to love others as He loved us

                                        ii.    By loving one another men will know we are His disciples

1.    Love must be the greatest percentage of who we are as Christians

2.    We are Christ like and therefore must be full of love

c.    Matt 22:37-40

                                          i.    We must love God with all our heart, soul, and mind

                                        ii.    We must love each other

1.    These are the two great commandments

III.           Oceans of the Earth are actually connected

a.    They are divided into four oceans by the dry land

                                          i.    Pacific, Atlantic, Indian, and Arctic

b.    Genesis 1:10

                                          i.    Seas is plural but really just adds emphasis

1.    Sea is singular in 1:26, 28 and Revelation 21:1

                                        ii.    Ultimately, the oceans are one large connected ocean

c.    Colossians 3:12-14

                                          i.    All of these virtues listed are bound together

1.    Love is the bond (shackles)

2.    All of these virtues stem from love

a.    A problem with any one of these means a problem with love

IV.          Oceans influence the entire biosphere of the Earth

a.    Amos 5:8

                                          i.    God calls the rain and drops it upon the Earth

1.    85% of rain comes from the ocean

2.    97% of water we use comes from the ocean

3.    90% of oxygen we breathe comes from the ocean

4.    1 out of every 6 jobs can be traced to marine life

                                        ii.    Romans 13:8-9

1.    Love “fulfills” the law

a.    The word means to fill to the point of overflowing

2.    All these commandments are summed up in one word, love

a.    If we love our neighbor we won’t commit these sins

                                                                                          i.    Adultery, stealing, lying, etc

V.           Oceans are and remain a mystery

a.    Only 5% of the ocean has been explored

                                          i.    Even the color of the ocean was a mystery for some time

b.    Psalm 107:24

                                          i.    No one knows the wonders of the deep

                                        ii.    Job 38:16

c.    1 John 3:1

                                          i.    God loves us enough to call us His children

1.    The world does not know this love

2.    The world does not know God

3.    The world does not know us

                                        ii.    Eph 5:1-2

1.    We must imitate God’s love in our daily walk

a.    God is love (1 John 4)

2.    We are a mystery to the world through our love

VI.          Conclusion

a.    1 Thessalonians 3:12

                                          i.    May God help us all to love one another as Christ loved us
